Primarily and East Coast tradition, hayrides are the bellweather for SCARE!!!
Be ready to be scared to death at this year's Los Angeles Haunted Hayride.
The venue is Griffith Park, site of a zoo 100 years ago. The story goes that shortly after the zoo opened in the early 1900s, the animals began to behave strangely. Stories circulated that visitors were being killed and animals were going missing. It was rumored that the soo was built on the site where cult sacrifices were practiced.
The community built a church at the entrance to the zoo and one day when they were all crowded in, the doors locked and the church was engulfed by flames. Many perished. Fact or fiction?
As you ride around the grounds in a tractor driven hay-filled wagon be prepared to meet the ghosts of those who died.
Also available with be a Carnival of Souls and a Haunted Haymaze.

Ooohhh....sounds very spooky! I think I'll pass on this one, though! ;-)
Fun Fun Fun! Wish I lived closer - I would go
Hi Jane: I think this is the best Halloween localism post I've seen so far. Your writing is always the best.
You know what would be cool to write about for your area: how different cultures celebrate Halloween. I have a vague recollection of a Day of the Dead thing on Juarez street? (Name?) Where the food vendors used to be? Maybe it's gone now.
Ooooo! This sounds too scarey for me. I'm a chicken when it comes to haunted anything!
Nancy
Jane ... As a kid, I used to visit my Great Grandmother who lived near the park. Her next-door neighbor, who made Granny seem like a spring chicken, used to tell stories of the massacre ... with a good Scotsman's twist! Gosh, the things we forget ... and then out of the blue .... Thanks for awakening a childhood memory ... and now I'm thinking of her shortbread!
Susan. too scary for me.
Debbie, you are a braver woman than I.
Leslie, thank you kindly. Do you mean Olvera St? I don't know that one. But that is a good idea about different cultures celebrating Halloween. Not sure we are different from any other large city though.
Nancy, me too.
Jack, nice story. I thought this was a myth.
Jane, now that is my kind of a haunted halloween. I love going to those kind of places.
Jane: Olvera Street! There were sugar skulls....
Dawn, not I said the fly.
Leslie, you know more than I.
I love a great hay ride. My church has them annually, although I'm sure a bit less scarey. I wish I were closer. I LOVE scarey.
Tammy, there must be somewhere you can go to scare yourself to death.
Halloween is a lot of fun.. This looks like a great way to get into the "spirit: .....
Joan, literally :)
Jane...now this really does sound tooo spooky for the likes of me...Happy Halloween!
Rebecca, Happy Halloween to you too.
Sounds like a lot of fun! If you go for that ride on the hayride, be sure to take your camera.
Ruth, I ain't going. Too scary.
Ah, come on... think of all the great photo opportunities for next year's calendar! ha!
Ruth, I can think of better ones:)
Sounds like a great time. Griffith Park is a fantastic local attraction without any additional fanfare, but this makes it even more enticing.
Jane, I've never been on a hayride...and have never thought of them as scary! My idea of scary would be riding in a New York City cab...which I've never been in either! I need to get out more. :)
Leilani
This sounds like a fun event even though we had chills reading your explanation Jane! Have a goulish time.
Jane,
You got me really scared of animals now. g
You guys have all the fun down there... Great post
Simon, not far for you to come :)
Leilani, I would think the MMA is scary enough.
Al & Peggy, thank you.
Gordon, woof.
Sally, I am sure Sacramento has its fair share. You have the politicians.
Now there's a bit of Griffith Park/Halloween trivia I never knew about! Thanks, Jane. ;-)
David, neither did I.
As always Jane your posts are exciting and this one sounds like an event I would want to see. I visited Salem Massachusetts around Halloween on a business trip one year and besides visiting the the witch museum, there were costume parties around the town. Great blog.
David, Salem would seem to be the heartland for Halloween. Scary!
