In a follow up to my previous story about Maria the Echo Park Goose who was to be relocated, with all the other geese and ganders at the lake, it turns out that Maria is in fact Mario!
The now famous gander was moved to the L.A. Zoo for her own protection. You know, the price of fame. It was there that the mistake was discovered. In any event, Mario will be quarantined at the Zoo for a month and then put on display.
Dominic, his longtime friend at Echo Park Lake, was him this week and reported that Mario did seem a little disoriented. Hopefully he will get used to his new quarters and new friends.
Meanwhile the draining of Echo Park Lake will take 2 years and cost $64.7 million.

Jane, poor Mario! Will he have to stay in the zoo for 2 years? Wow. I'm glad that they'll be building temporary ponds for the rest of his pals.
Jane, I like stories with happy endings! Since our area started requiring developers to put in retention ponds to alleviate storm water runoff our area is now a haven for hundreds and hundreds of ducks and geese. Mario, enjoy your new home!
I saw that Goose on the CBS national news and yelled, hey I know that Goose, Jane Blogged about it. LOL I was nearly expecting to see you on the news again. I hope it will settle in at the zoo and be heappy.
Jane...I looked up the 'life expectancy' for geese, and was amazed to find that they average between 20-25 years! Hopefully, the project will finish on time so he can return again.
Thanks for updating us Jane! Hope he likes his new home!
Jane - Can I just have the goose for myself? I will take very good care of it!
Maria, yes indeed :(
Bruce, I will pass your message on.
Tammy, they must have missed me on that one.
David, actually, it's 40 years :)
Deborah, me too. Poor guy.
Patty, I don't think Dominic would like that.
Hi Jane, For 64 million they could have a huge bucket brigade and help the unempyed in the state, and be done in half the time, LOL.
Poor Maria Mario, I'm sorry that he's disoriented in his new "protective custody" home. I hope Dominic can help him get used to the new digs.....and she's a he!!! WOW
William, great idea. Where are they going to empty the water though? :)
Mary, yes, and all this time she/he had us fooled. Dominic the most.
I'd be a little disortiented too if I were mistaken for the opposite sex. Hope Mario adapts well and soon.
Ae we susre thant Dominic isn't Dominique-a?
Charita, so do I.
Janice, LOL.
Hi Jane - Thanks for the update. Several huge flocks of geese flew overhead yesterday and it did make me wonder about your little feathered friend.
Did I miss your post on why they were draining the lake?
Susan, I don't think our friend Mario is a Canadian goose. They were his cousings :)
Carla, you certainly did. I will send you the link, because it was a cute story.
Gerry, uh, yes :)
I'm thinking along the same lines at Janet (comment #12). You Californians!! :=)
Lori, don't you love us :)
I followed the story of Mario (alias Maria) and it touched my heart. I had a duck named Peggy and it could have been, might have been, should possibly have been Perry? In any case, they attach themselves to a particular family member just as Mario did with Dominic. I forgot to mention that Peggy was a present one Easter morning - 70 long years ago and she(he) lived with us for many years and responded just like a dog. We provided her with a enormous tub of clean water, but would not go into the tub voluntarily.....never, ever.
Helen, that is a cute story. Imagine a duck not wanting to go into the water. I do believe Maria is very happy at the zoo. I haven't checked up on her lately.
